Vilnius donating to its residents nearly 100 million euros to renew their yards

08/08/2017

The City has found a way to encourage residents of Vilnius to renew the entire quarters of the old multi-apartment houses – the Council approved a large-scale ‘Neighbourhood territories’ renewal programme providing for compensation to 1,288 newly established neighbourhoods for a renewal of their respective quarters. The City of Vilnius will allocate 10 euros for one sq.m of renewed territory at the blocks of older than 15 years’ multi-apartment houses to turn them into cosy, convenient and original areas. Should all the neighbourhoods of Vilnius choose to renew their areas, they would be allocated a municipality support of estimated 95 million euros.

‘As many as two thirds of Vilnius residents live in ‘sleeping’ districts that clearly lack cosiness and convenience. It is my duty and responsibility to make the districts attractive for residents of the city. This is why we launched this project, the first of that scope in Lithuania, where to those willing to renew their yards the City will allocate 10 euros for each square meter of the territory being renewed’, says Remigijus Šimašius, the Mayor of Vilnius.

Having joined into neighbourhoods residents of Vilnius will be deciding themselves how to renew the yards and where to channel the investment – the security of the yards (fence, video surveillance cameras), sport or entertainment equipment, or just to renew the infrastructure, arranging greenery) The neighbourhoods will be required to draw up quarter renewal plans. According to the programme Vilnius residents may use the support to renew pedestrian paths and pavements, install access barriers, video surveillance cameras on buildings, or benches, waste baskets, pergolas, or plant some flowers. In addition, funding will be provided to arranging car parks in the yards, children play grounds or sport fields with equipment. Funding will be also provided to official recording of plots of land formed in the neighbourhood territory. All the expenses exceeding the funding allocated by the City will be covered by members of the neighbourhoods.
