From August 6, 2016, Vilnius Municipality will introduce clearer road markings on the Žirmūnų and Olandų roundabouts.
The municipality expects the markings will improve the roads‘ traffic flow by 20 percent, and reduce congestion during peak times. The markings are also anticipated to improve safety for pedestrians, as well as improving accessibility for emergency services.
The Žirmūnų and Olandų roundabouts were the first to be chosen as they experience the heaviest traffic flows in the city. Around 33,000 and 34,000 vehicles cross them per day respectively.
Vilnius Municipality plans further improvements to traffic management later in the year, beginning with the roundabout in front of Vilnius railway station.
In order to improve the flow of traffic and improve safety at the roundabout, the municipality aims to separate the station’s car park from the road with a barrier, and install pedestrian crossing islands.
Following the improvements made to the Žirmūnų and Olandų roundabouts, the municipality will monitor whether the safety and traffic-flow situation has improved.
If the proposed improvements are met, more changes to other roundabouts in Vilnius will begin in 2017.
