An electronic public transport ticket presented in a press conference in a trolleybus

2007-11-23 11:07

Mayor Juozas Imbrasas and Director of the municipality enterprise “Susisiekimo paslaugos” Vaidotas Antanavičius presented an electronic monthly ticket for Vilnius public transport in a press conference held in a trolleybus. According to the mayor, it is currently “the most modern public transport electronic ticket project in Europe”. A particular feature is that data is stored not only in a passenger’s card, but also in the database of the municipality enterprise “Susisiekimo paslaugos” – information is entered in it via mobile connection when buying and replenishing electronic public transport tickets. An electronic ticket, which will be valid for two years, will be replenished via Internet, mobile phone, or in shopping centres.

An electronic monthly ticket will be sold and valid as of 1 December. A transition period has been envisaged until August next year – during this period both paper and electronic monthly tickets will be valid on public transport. As of August 2008, only electronic monthly tickets will be sold. Later – not earlier than autumn 2008 – an electronic single ticket system will be introduced: the same card will be used both for single and monthly public transport tickets.

From December 2007 until January 2008, an electronic ticket card will cost LTL 2, in February–March – LTL 4, in April–July – LTL 6, and from August onwards – LTL 8.

The project for the design and implementation of the electronic ticket system is partially financed from the European Regional Development Fund which allocated the largest amount of funds – LTL 14 million. The project, which will cost LTL 19.3 million, is implemented in three Lithuanian cities: Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipėda.
